Dark haired, broody, and with eyes as tempestuous as the sea, he stole my breath away.

The pull to become his friend was irresistible. Falling for him inevitable. Getting my heart broken inescapable.

Now the reformed bad boy is back, working as a police officer in our small town. He wants to talk, but I’m determined to keep my distance. I may still be right where he left me, but I’m not the girl I used to be. Or so I’d like to think.

However, when my ex-boyfriend refuses to get the memo that we’re over, and nobody in Bluebonnet Creek believes Matthew has changed, we come to an agreement.

Three months. Weekly dates. And absolutely no kissing.

Faking it shouldn’t be hard, but the problem is, being with Matthew doesn’t feel fake at all. Then my life implodes, and he comes to my rescue.

What if my life isn’t the only thing in danger, but also my heart?

Right Where You Left Me is a small town, second chance, fake dating, friends to lovers romance and book four in the Bluebonnet Creek series. This one leans heavily into emotional angst.

Matthew initially comes across as easygoing with a hint of cocky arrogance, but underneath that façade he’s sensitive, caring, and deeply vulnerable. His childhood trauma shaped him in ways he’s never fully healed from, and the misplaced guilt he’s carried for years adds a strong emotional layer to his character.

Jessica is kind, hardworking, empathetic, and a natural people person. She’s dedicated to her job and fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She can be stubborn, but in a way that feels earned. I liked that she made Matthew put in the effort and didn’t go easy on him.

The story is packed with emotional elements: emotional abuse, death, grief, guilt, and much more. There’s a very small amount of spice, a touch of humor, and a bit of mystery that builds into several plot twists. Some of those twists were a bit predictable, but they still added tension and kept the story moving.

Their journey isn’t easy, but the way they navigate the pain, secrets, and unresolved history between them makes their ending feel that much more satisfying.
