Rian is a crime boss. Unashamedly violent and totally in control. He takes care of, and loves his working family and is desperately trying to reconnect with his son after his wife’s death. He becomes intrigued with a doctor he sees and starts following him. Preston Abbott (“don’t call me Preston”) is a surgeon leaving the hospital one night when he realizes he’s being followed. As he confronts the man, gunshots ring out and Rian is hit. Rian forces Abbott to go with him to tend his wound. Thus begins the saga of Rian and Abbott.
I haven’t read the series that precedes this one so there was a bit of a disconnect when all the characters (and their actions) were brought into this book. But it didn’t last long and was explained enough that the confusion didn’t last.
I felt that Abbott was a little to accepting that Rian was going to murder him and even though Conan said the same thing he still kind of shrugged it off. (Maybe he knew he was in a Riley Hart book and knew there would be a happy ending). Sorry, I have a warped sense of humor.
I was really struck by how his soldiers felt about Rian. Their closeness was almost palpable, even when disagreeing. Their acceptance of Abbott happened fairly quickly.
A couple of surprises rounded out the story. I think this was a very successful book.
