From the Ashes is book two in the Baton Rouge Bachelors Duet. This is a second chance, romance. There is violence, angst, suspense, and appearances from a few NOLA Defiance characters. The duet overlaps book six of the NOLA Defiance series.

This was entertaining and easy to read, but I just found it to be okay. Not much really changed in part 2 besides less spice and more drama. It seemed to add plot holes. Like how did Hattrick find out Cains plans? The timeline for Cain meeting James didn’t really make sense to me. I don’t think we get a full story about why Cain joined the Bachelor’s. The Bachelor’s made no sense. There was no true loyalty or friendships. It was every man for himself at all times. What would attract him to that life style? He’d been better off joining Defiance.

Additionally, I was hoping there would be more character development but unfortunately that just didn’t happen. Again there was repetitive arguments and break ups. Makaylie never grew into the fierce independent woman that was brimming under the surface. I also thought it was strange that we never really learn about or meet her parents. Cain never really chilled out. He continued to be a over controlling alpha. I was also disappointed that we didn’t hear more about his sister and niece. I figured there would be some type of reunion or more info on their estrangement.

Lastly, I’m all for plot twists but this one just didn’t sit right. Rodberg showed zero real emotion after everything went down with Joey. I was offended on her behalf. And why would Cain and Rodberg not see off Makaylie and Joey first! I also felt that it was unprofessional to let Makylie call Deacon to give him the big news. I also felt that Makaylie just went on her merry way to have a happily ever after but there was way too much aftermath that was never addresses between ger and Cain. With the epilogue, it sounded like it is a possibility we could see these two again in the future. It did seem open ended.
