The waitress returns with our coffees, and I nod a thank you to her as she places them down, then walks off again. Picking up the piping hot mug, I bring it to my lips and take a deep breath before I speak. “Why did you bring me here? Was it to embarrass me?” I ask, taking a sip of the delicious hot liquid before it slides down my throat, soothing my tense nerves.
He chuckles as he watches me intently. “No, Makaylie, I want to figure out why you’re so awkward around me.”
I look at him dumbfounded. “I, ah… I don’t know?” I reply, as more of a question than a statement.
Cain chuckles and leans forward, resting his elbows on the table. He licks his bottom lip and drags his teeth against it. That seems to be his thing, and fuck is it sexy.
“How about we get the obvious things out of the way,” he says, confusing me.
“What obvious things?”
“Well, we know I’m good-looking, have a great body under these clothes. So… is that the reason for you fumbling around me?”
Closing my eyes and opening them wide, I almost spit out the mouthful of coffee, but instead, I gulp it down a little more dramatically. “Excuse me?”
Egomaniac much? This guy is a piece of work!
“So that’s a yes. You’re affected by my looks. That’s normal… most women are,” he states categorically with a smirk.
“You are not “good-looking,” ” I jab and use air quotes for good measure in an attempt to deflate his ego, but he simply laughs.
“Yes, I am. Now, let’s get to the other burning question…”
What an arrogant son of a bitch.
He thinks he’s God’s gift to women.
Well, maybe he is, but you can be a little more subtle about how much one loves oneself!
“What other question?” I ask, not even beginning to imagine what he could possibly come up with next.
“Why am I so taken with you?”
My eyes bug out of my head, and I gasp in shock. Okay! Not expecting that.
“Huh?” is all I can manage.
“Why, out of all the ladies in Baton Rouge, have you been stuck in my head since I met you last night?”

Up In Flames is book one in the Baton Rouge Bachelors Duet. This is a Insta-lust romance. It was entertaining and an easy read. There is light violence, angst, suspense, spice, and appearances from a few NOLA Defiance charcaters. In fact the story does overlap from book six of the NOLA Defiance series.
I did find that the plot was slow placed. I felt because of the slow pace there was a lack of plot development. Not a whole lot actually happens and things started getting repetitive between Cain and Makaylie. Their immaturity and personality change gave me whiplash.
Makaylie really frustrated me the most. She grew very dependant on Cain, and quickly, which disappointed me cause she has that fire and sass brimming, but she always submitted and let things go. Reminds me of an abused woman. I liked her best when she was giving Cain a piece of her mind.
Cain is still a huge mystery. We slowly learn tidbits about his past but there is still so much we don’t know about him. This man is crazy jealous and moody, and he often comes off as insane and intense. But then you get a glimpse of his sweet side.
Because this is a duet it obviously ends with a cliffy. There is more drama brewing and things are likely to implode soon. I’m curious to see how things play out for these two and what the future holds for them.

I really enjoyed reading this blog post! The blurb for “Up in Flames” sounds intriguing, and I love romantic suspense novels with alpha heroes. The dynamic between Makaylie and Cain seems intense and I’m curious to know more about their relationship. Can you tell me if this book is part of a series or can it be read as a standalone?
