The Stablemaster’s Heart
Tales of Lilleforth, Book 2
By Sarah Honey

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Mother Jones has spent his life working hard, running the royal stables at Lilleforth, and watching on fondly as those around him fall in love and lust.
But nobody, man or woman, has ever stoked that fire for him—right until the new royal groom barrels into his life. Vasily is all sunshine smiles, golden hair and laughter. For the first time, Mother finds himself attracted to someone, and he can’t help wondering what it might be like to court—and bed—his handsome new groom.
But Mother is over thirty, rough around the edges, and hardly a catch.
Vasily couldn’t possibly return his affections—could he?
Vasily Petrov, the fourth son of the king of Koroslova, is travelling incognito for a year. In Koroslova the old ways are the only ways, and a man being attracted to another man is unthinkable—especially if you’re a prince. But in Lilleforth, Vasily has the chance to spread his wings and explore the side of himself that he can no longer deny, and he intends to make the most of it.
Except, he’s falling for his stablemaster—and worse, Mother doesn’t know he’s a prince, and Vasily doesn’t know how to tell him. And the longer he waits, the more he fears losing what they have when the truth comes out.
This was not the plan.

The rasp of Vasily’s unshaven skin against Mother’s cheek had his heart racing and his blood heating, and he suddenly understood all those times he’d come across Felix and his king in the stables with their shirts untucked and their faces flushed.
If kissing someone you cared for felt like this, how was anybody meant to resist it? And if this was what kissing was like, what would it feel like to get Vasily naked, to run his fingers through that thatch of blond chest hair and trace the muscled lines of his back?
His cock bucked against his lacings, and Mother wrenched back, panting, before he ended up spilling in his trousers. Vasily’s brow creased. “What is it?”
He shook his head, holding up one finger, and when he trusted himself to speak, he said, “It was only meant to be a kiss, Vas.”
Vasily looked pointedly down at the obvious bulge in the front of his own trousers. “What if I want more?” he asked, one eyebrow raised.
Mother’s heart raced and his cock firmed at the prospect. “More?”
“More,” Vasily said. His tone was firm even though he was blushing to the roots of his hair, and Mother wanted so badly to say yes.
But underneath the sheer overwhelming want he felt right now, there was one simple truth that rang out. Vasily was something special. Mother desired him, yes, but he wanted more than doorstep kisses and one night. So he closed his eyes and took several slow, deep breaths until he had himself under some semblance of control.
He opened his eyes to find Vasily staring at him, wearing a hurt expression that made his heart clench. “It’s not that I don’t want you, lad,” he said, his voice rough. “I want you more than I’ve ever wanted anyone. But I don’t do”—he waved a hand up and down Vasily’s body— “this. Well, I didn’t,” he said, “but you have me feeling things, wanting things, that I never have. And I don’t want to rush.”
Vasily’s expression cleared. “So, this isn’t you saying no?”
Mother hesitated before deciding that if he was telling the truth, he might as well tell the whole truth. “I don’t want a quick fumble in a doorway, Vasily. I want this to be something. I want to—” He cleared his throat. “I want to court you,” he said firmly.
The lad’s face broke into a wide smile. “I want that too.”
Mother’s heart raced the way it did when he was on horseback, exhilaration washing over him. “Then we’ll do that.”
Vasily licked his lips. “With kissing? And all the rest of it?”
“With kissing, and all the rest of it, in time,” Mother agreed, smiling so hard his face hurt. “Whatever you’d like.”

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Vasily, a prince, on his own for the first time. Learning that he might just get the chance to be more than fifth in line to the throne. Mother…(yes the hero’s name is Mother) is the stable master. He also learns there is much more to life than just horses. Their learning experiences are turning out to be very pleasurable for both of them.
This was a sweet, happy story. Smidgeon of angst, a scary moment, and a very understanding queen all helped to make it a good book. I liked the characters in the first book and since they figured prominently in this one that added to the enjoyment for me.
The author creates unique, quirky characters. Her stories have a lot of snark and honest feelings that always bring a smile.
A fairytale story with a happy ever after.
