The new man in Kasper’s life wants more than his fame. Mat wants his heart. He’s willing to battle his own trust issues for a chance at real love, but someone else wants Kasper out of the way. Excerpt – Scene 1:
Kasper leaned close to Mat to be heard over the arena’s thumping music. “How do you feel about having your picture on a tabloid site?”
Mat looked at him, confused. “Why?”
“Because I’m pretty sure we’ll make at least one. Those cameras across the room aren’t here to photograph the game.”
Mat looked at the photographers, confusion hardening to something else before he turned back to Kasper. “I guess it’s too late to do anything about it now.”
“True, but does it bother you?”
“No.”
Kasper smiled and kissed his cheek. “Good.”
The fact that Mat hadn’t let go of his hand proved he wasn’t lying. He hoped it also proved something else but wasn’t willing to make assumptions.
Kasper sat holding Mat’s hand, where it rested on his thigh for most of the game. He couldn’t tell whether it was true affection or Mat’s refusal to back down in front of the paparazzi. He was amused by one option and hopeful about the other.
The game ended with the Lakers down by two points. Kasper led Mat through the tangle of fans, retracing their steps to the VIP entrance. The second he emerged from the building people started calling his name. Mat’s grip on his hand tightened. Kasper squeezed back, ignoring them and joining the other celebrities in the designated pool of fame to wait for his turn at the valet stand.
“Does that happen a lot?” Mat asked, refusing to look at the people trying to get their attention.
“It depends. I think the thing with bottle and the car put me back on their radar.”
“Lucky for you.”
Kasper smirked.
“Maybe we should have snuck out early,” Mat said.
“It wouldn’t have mattered. People are usually staked out here the whole game.”
Someone whistled and shouted Kasper’s name, trying to startle him into a response. He ignored it.
“That doesn’t bother you?” Mat asked.
“You get used to it.”
“Would they stop yelling if you talked to them?”
“They might, but that’s worse. An interview is powerful clickbait. I don’t want to help line their pockets. Especially not when they’ll misquote everything I say to fit whatever sham story they’re writing. It’s better to pretend I don’t hear it.” Kasper gave his hand another squeeze. “I’m sorry. It’ll be over in a couple of minutes.”
“It’s okay, just strange.”
“Welcome to my life.”
Mat raised their hands to his mouth and kissed the back of Kasper’s. Kasper couldn’t hear the maddening click of cameras, but he imagined it, half the group thinking they’d just scored a thousand-dollar picture – or whatever the tabloids were paying.
Regardless of how long it lasted, as of that afternoon, their relationship was official.
Let It Rein: A Blue Series Story by DP Denman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Kasper Rein is a rock god. He has it all, plus a stalker. Now he also has a paramedic named Mat if they can just get past tabloid lies and threats to their lives.
Kasper, while coming across as a party boy is sweet and endearing. Mat is just a plain nice guy. They played well off each other and while the relationship might of seemed fragile I think the strength running through the two characters was well done. I also liked Eric. The characters in the peripherals didn’t really make an impact with me. I thought Kaspers love affair with his motorcycles was cute.
I’ve liked this series and this is a good addition. The bad guy was a surprise to me. The writing was nice. Although this was a complete story I think reading of some or all of the other books would probably make the enjoyment of this book better. Not necessary though. I did think the book ended rather abruptly even with the epilogue.
