The Knights Club Series by C.J. Baty

The Knights Club (formerly the Gentleman’s Club) first appeared in the Warfield Hotel Mysteries Series. It was owned by Stony Whitecastle and is located in Atlanta, GA. At the beginning of the Knights Club/Starting Over, Stony is selling the club to Xavier Knight. He renames the club the Knights Club and instead of a private club opens it the public. Some patrons still hold membership though.

This series involves Xavier and his crew of employees and their involvement with a local police family. We meet Sebastian Brady in Starting Over along with his dysfunctional family. Seb’s struggle with his homophobic oldest brother and the shadow of his dead father, Detective Delmonico Brady, haunts Seb as he tries to make a new life for himself.

Occasionally, a character from the Warfield Hotel series will pop up but they are not central to the story line. Everyone who works at the Knights Club has a past and secret they are running from. They are mixed bag of people who have been suffered many things. The Knights Club is their home and the people who work there are their families. But, even families don’t like each other all the time…

Book #1 – Starting Over

Xavier Knight was starting his life over. A new city. A new club. The past was gone, and he had everything to look forward to… except… love. That ship had sailed, never to return. He was too old to play the games or stack up the one night stands. Until, an old enemy’s son walked into his club and his heart.

Sebastian Brady was through. Through with hiding who he was. Through letting his brother officers dictate his life. And completely through, with his family telling him who he was. He turned his back on his badge and his family’s heritage in the Atlanta police force. But, he never imagined that he’d be serving drinks in a gay bar and working for the hottest silver fox he had ever seen in his life.

Xavier and Seb have a lot to learn from each other. Hopefully, their growing love will survive Xavier’s past, Seb’s family, and a host of characters with secrets of their own, who all work at the Knights Club.

Starting Over by C.J. Baty
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Seb is a cop. Fed up with the rampant homophobia in the department, specially from his own brother. He quits and gets a job bartending at the Knights Club. Xavier bought the club as a way of starting over. Disillusioned with life, he just want to run his club on his terms.

He realizes he wants his new bartender but he doesn’t mix business and pleasure. Until he does. Seb wants Xavier just as bad. When they start a relationship neither man expects it to turn into love.

For a short story I felt like there was a lot of personality development. Both with the main characters and several secondary players. A little bit of mystery and way to much of Seb’s bigoted brother. A nice story.

Book #2 – Letting Go

Calypso knew he looked good. He loved bright colors, makeup, and most of all, high heels. The higher the better. The sassy mouth and self-assured man he presented to the outside world wasn’t how he felt on the inside. At the Knights Club he hide the self-doubt and depression. Until, Benedict Hart walked in bringing all his old demons back to life.

Benedict Hart was a high-priced gigolo. It’s not what he started out in life to do but it paid the bills. Meeting Calypso at the Knights Club turned his world upside down. The man was sexy, smart mouthed and completely sure of himself. He made Benedict want things he hadn’t thought about in years. Losing a dear friend spurs him into action, but will his past get in their way?

The Knights Club hosts a group of characters diverse in every way, but they are family. Xavier Knight watches over them as if they were his children. And, like most families, things don’t always run smoothly.

Letting Go by C.J. Baty
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Calypso is beautiful. Mascara, heels, glitter and gloss are all part of who he is. He’s sassy but doesn’t take any sass. When he starts falling under the spell of Benedict, he isn’t sure it’s a good thing. Ben is an escort, he doesn’t proclaim it, but isn’t ashamed of it either. The road to happiness is full of bumps and potholes but these men are meant to be together.

Calypso wears his sky high heels like the diva that he is. Ben rocks a tailored suit to perfection. Once again the author has written a short story that gives the characters a lot of depth. Bringing the rest of the Knight’s Club personality’s along for the ride. Some drama adds to the story, but not the enough to pull me out of the vibrant sparkle that is Calypso and Ben.

Steve Coulter had never wanted anything more than to be a cop. Being gay did not fit into his career choice. Keeping things on the down low he could have both, but there was no way he was coming out. He didn’t trust anyone that much. Rio Garcia the hot bartender at the Knights Club made him want things he knew he couldn’t have, so why did he keep going back.

Trust. It’s a big thing. Can Rio and Steve overcome their past issues with trust to find a happily ever after that works for them? Life and family at the Knights Club is always a challenge.

Rio serves drinks at The Knights Club. He watches the cop that sits at the end of the bar watching him.

Steve watches Rio, wanting him even though he knows he will never admit aloud that he is gay. They dance around each other, finally giving in to their desires. Steve feels guilty that he can’t proclaim his love for Rio.

This book was a bit different than the others in the series. I liked the little bit of mystery in it. Rio and Steve are very sweet together. The series is nicely written and the characters are all becoming one big family.

Coming Out by C.J. Baty
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Phillip has a gambling problem and besides getting him beat up, it’s destroyed his home too. Under the protective custody of Malachi he keeps lying to everyone around him until, in the ruins of his life, Phillip and Malachi shared a kiss. Phillip knows never to fall for a straight man but the way Malachi responds to him says he’s not entirely straight. In the midst of several murders probably related to the gambling ring he’s involved in, Phillip starts falling for his cop. When things take a bad turn, Malachi will do anything to protect his man.

I believe this is the best of the series so far, a lot more action for sure. These guys discovering each other really raised the heat quotient I thought. The bad guy wasn’t really a surprise though. It’s time for the secrets between Xavier and Zack to be revealed, past time really. Looking forward to the next book.

Finding Forgiveness by C.J. Baty

This book was a nice conclusion to the series. Seb and Xavier worked through their differences. Everyone else seems happy. Completely not what I was expecting. Mysteries were solved, a few questions were answered. A couple of things were left hanging but that’s okay too. Not the strongest book in the series but it ended on the right note.

C. J. Baty lives in southwest Ohio. Her heart, however, lives in the mountains of Tennessee where she hopes to retire some day. The mountains have always provided her with inspiration and a soothing balm to the stresses of everyday life.
The dream of writing her own stories started in high school but was left on the back burner of life until her son introduced her to fan fiction and encouraged her to give it a try. She found that her passion for telling a story was still there and writing them down to share with others was much more thrilling than she had ever expected.

She has a loving and supportive family who don’t mind fixing their own meals when she is in the middle of a story, and a network of friends who have encouraged and cheered her on in her quest of being an author.

One thing she has learned from life and she is often heard to say is: “You are never too old to follow your dream!”
