Torturing yourself for something that happened in the past that wasn’t your fault can change the trajectory of your life and make you miss out on something wonderful. Ivan’s swamped in guilt for past events where his friends Wes and Rolly were hurt. He believes he’s best alone at the family forge, trying to somehow atone for his sins. It hurt to see Ivan cutting himself off and believing he’s undeserving of having anything good in his life.
Wes and Rolly―who’ve been partners for a long while―miss Ivan so much. They’d briefly been together but the accident put the brakes on exploring more. Fast forward and we see the three thrown back together again. It’s raining cats and dogs and the forge is flooding, maybe it’s the ideal time to make Ivan face the truth that he isn’t to blame and he can take that heavy weight off his shoulders? Can he be convinced?
I came here from The Sin Bin series which I’m really enjoying and I like the authors writing style. There’s a lot happening and you always get a flavour of the town/village where the story is set and you really get to know the characters in the raw. I felt Ivan’s self punishment, I felt he wasn’t even really looking for contrition, he was just resigned and content to suffer with his guilt. Wes and Rolly though were not gonna let it happen on their watch, and begin to chip away at Ivan. There’s so much humour here too as they set about convincing Ivan he deserves more, but will love will out? I really enjoyed this story about a second chance, I liked the characters, the setting and the dialogue between these three men.

Ivan has shut himself off from the world for ten years, after a drunk driving car accident caused him and the two most important men in his life serious injuries. Ruining their hopes for the future. The blame rested solely with him and he couldn’t face his guilt. He spent all those years at his forge. Being a blacksmith saved his sanity but it was a lonely existence.
When Rolly and Wes got tired of waiting for Ivan to come to his senses and come back to them, they went to him. In the middle of a flood. Ivan was less than happy to see them. Still unable to reconcile the pain and loss he had caused with the love he felt. They survived the flood, but the question remains. Can Ivan forgive himself and allow these men back into his heart where they belong?
Family issues along with health concerns carry the story along. At times both funny and heartbreaking, it is a story of love’s impact on the even the most saddened heart. I enjoyed the book.

Dahlia Donovan wrote her first romance series after a crazy dream about shifters and damsels in distress. She prefers irreverent humour and unconventional characters. An autistic and occasional hermit, her life wouldn’t be complete without her husband and her massive collection of books and video games.
